Undergraduates

Berkeley undergraduates can search and apply for SSL internships through UC Berkeley’s Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP). Berkeley sophomores can apply for two-year apprenticeships in systems, mechanical and electrical engineering through our URSA Minor program. California community college students can apply to our Advancing Space Science through Undergraduate Research Experience (ASSURE) summer research program. For clarification or additional information, please contact SSL Student Engagement Manager Dan Zevin at dzevin@ssl.berkeley.edu. Undergraduate students from any college or university are also encouraged to join our Space Opps Google Group for news about related student opportunities around the country. Students with interest in heliophysics (at any level) can join HelioHub, our Discord-based support and learning community.

Undergraduate class:

SSL offers a yearly, elective space engineering class in partnership with the UC Berkeley College of Engineering's Aerospace Engineering major. AE-120, Introduction to Space Engineering, is taught by Dr. John W. Bonnell, an SSL project physicist. The class includes six guest lecturers drawn from SSL and local aerospace companies.

Graduates

Berkeley graduate students can apply for specific paid internship opportunities, which are offered intermittently. Current or incoming Berkeley graduate students pursuing degrees related to space sciences, including but not limited to physics, astronomy or engineering, can apply to the Robert P. Lin Graduate Fellowship, which provides funds for summer work.

Networking

We hold a monthly colloquium series that is open to members of the Berkeley community and SSL donors. The talks are of particular interest to colleagues from Astronomy, Physics, and Earth & Planetary Science (EPS). These talks are held on the second Friday of each month. To attend, please contact the colloquium committee. Our researchers also participate in the Center for Integrative Planetary Science (CIPS) seminars, which are held every Wednesday starting at 1:10pm in 131 Campbell Hall.
