Biography

My research focuses mainly on observations (both in-situ and remote) and simulations of space plasma processes and ionospheric electrodynamics primarily at Earth and Mars (but the same physics applies to any planetary object with an atmosphere). Throughout my career, I have been involved in the analysis and interpretation of data from NASA’s Wind, Polar, IMAGE, THEMIS/ARTEMIS, Lunar Prospector, Mars Global Surveyor, and Cassini missions as well as plasma data from instruments on geosynchronous satellites. Currently, I am on the science teams of NASA’s MAVEN and InSight missions to Mars and on the science team of the Emirates Mars Mission. Since 1996, I have been first author or co-author on over 50 refereed publications and have been the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on over a dozen federal grants. Since 2017, I have been the director of Multiverse, SSL’s science education and outreach group. I also teach astronomy, and occasionally physics, at Berkeley City College.
