Biography

Eleanor Judd is an experimental physicist currently specializing in the design and implementation of real-time trigger systems for both ground- and space-based experiments. Her primary project is the trigger system for the STAR experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. STAR uses the RHIC collider to investigate the properties of the quark-gluon plasma, which is the state of matter that existed immediately after the Big Bang. Eleanor’s secondary project is the Probe of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics mission (POEMMA), and its precursor balloon experiments. POEMMA consists of 2 satellites flying in formation that can look straight down at the Earth or sideways at the horizon. It is designed to detect ultra-high energy cosmic rays by observing the Nitrogen fluorescence from the extended air showers (EAS) created when these particles traverse the atmosphere. POEMMA will also study Earth-skimming tau neutrinos by detecting the upward-going Cherenkov flash from tau-decay generated EASs.
