===========FIXING THE HP PCL6 COLOR FAILURE=================== Now and then Hewlett Packard(R) introduces new improved drivers for various platforms and their many printers. For their "PCL 6" family of color LaserJets, their current recommendation is their HP Universal Printing PCL6 driver. Its download installer is: upd-pcl6-x32-5.8.0.17508.exe which handles a wide variety of HP printers. However, as installed, it prints everything in black and white. As shipped, its default setting for "Device Type" is AUTODETECT, which is intended to allow this one driver to function properly with both B/W printers and color printers. However, owing to some kind of bug, this AUTODETECT mode fails, and the printing reverts to B/W. My fix for MS Windows Seven has these steps: 1. Click Start::Devices and Printers. 2. Double left-click your printer icon. 3. Under "Printer Actions" left-click the link "Customize your printer." 4. On the "HP Universal Printing PCL6 Properties" page, click Preferences. 5. On the "Preferences" page, the top-right cartoon on each tab shows B/W. This is the symptom. 6. Back on the "Properties" page, Device Settings tab, note your default setting for Device Type = AutoDetect. This is the heart of the problem. AutoDetect does not work. So... 7. Change Device Type = Color and click OK. 8. Return to the "Preferences" page, now the tabs show the color page cartoon. 9. Print a colorful test page. Enjoy, Mike Lampton
