Dr. C. Lisse from University of Maryland and an international team of collaborators have observed Comet P/Encke with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer in coordination with ROSAT, RXTE, ISO and ground based telescopes at ESO and CTIO. Among their scientific objectives is to get a better understanding of the origin of the luminous X-ray emission detected from Comet Hyakutake for which the physical mechanism remains uncertain. EUVE monitored intensively Comet P/Encke between July 6 and July 20 of 1997 with the three co-aligned scanning telescopes. The scanners were used instead of the spectrometers and the DS in order to maximize the photometric imaging information over 4 pass-bands covering the EUV range. This observation strategy was innovative.
